Speech Writing

Group - One Day Course

Course Description

This seminar shows how to write speeches which put a clear message across, in a way designed to interest and influence an audience. It does this by introducing a clear planning formula, which is carried out before writing actually begins. We outline basic formats for speeches and give participants practical experience in mapping out and discussing actual speeches.

Who Will Benefit

Anyone who writes or delivers speeches. Those who contribute information for speechwriters to use.

Course Outline

  • Planning a Speech

A step-by-step planning formula which starts with the definition of the objective of the particular speech and specific methods on how to achieve it. We identify the type of speech most appropriate to the occasion.

  • Formats for Speeches

Most famous speeches are intrinsically simple, with a theme that, in Churchill's words, is "hammered".

We look at how to structure a speech so that the key message comes across in a way which will create interest, and that the audience will be able to clearly follow and remember. Formats are offered which give options for speeches of different lengths, and different purposes. Clearance of the format before the first draft.

  • Writing Rules

How spoken language (which is heard) differs from written language (which is read).
    Getting and keeping attention.
    Use of examples, stories, anecdotes.
How to construct or choose metaphors.
When to be imprecise or non-committal.
    When to use first person.
    "Power" words and conjunctional links.

  • Speech Text

Forms of layout and typeface recommendations.

  • Practice

Participants will select occasions and topics, and produce outlines using the concepts covered.
